RaaS: Robotization without CAPEX – Robot Rental & Leasing for SMBs

RaaS: Robotizace bez CAPEX – Pronájem & Leasing Robotů pro SMB

🤖 Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) / Rental / Leasing: Financing robotization without capital expenditure

🔹 Introduction: Overcoming the CAPEX barrier

The biggest obstacle to implementing robotics in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMBs) is the high initial investment (CAPEX). Companies know that robots solve labor shortages and increase efficiency, but they cannot afford to spend hundreds of thousands or millions of crowns all at once.

The solution is flexible financing models that turn capital expenditure into operating expenses (OPEX). Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS), rental and leasing models allow you to get a robotic cell up and running with zero or minimal upfront payment.

🔹 Main part: Three paths to low-risk robotization

Although the terms leasing and RaaS are often used interchangeably, they represent different financial and service models.

🤝 Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) – All-inclusive service

RaaS is the most flexible and comprehensive model. You don't buy a robot, you buy its performance and guaranteed functionality for a contractual period (often 12 to 36 months).

  • Financial nature: OPEX (Operating Expenses). No initial investment.
  • What's included: Everything! Complete hardware (cobot, grippers, sensors), installation, programming, all service, maintenance, spare parts and support.
  • Benefit: Zero risk. The robot generates profit from day one and the provider takes care of its functionality. After the contract ends, you return the robot or rent a newer model.

📝 Operational rental

Operating lease is close to RaaS, but tends to be less comprehensive in terms of the scope of services.

  • Financial nature: OPEX (Operating Expenses).
  • Principle: You pay a monthly rent for the use of the property. The robot usually remains the property of the lessor.
  • Service: A service package is optional, but the rental usually only includes a basic warranty. You can choose a shorter or longer rental period.

🏦 Financial leasing

Financial leasing is a traditional model that primarily deals with the purchase of a machine in installments.

  • Financial nature: CAPEX (Fixed Assets). This is a loan product.
  • Principle: You pay the full purchase price of the robot. After paying for the item (and the down payment), you become its owner.
  • Service: Service, maintenance and the risk of failure follow you as if you were the new owner.
  • Benefit: The robot becomes the property of the company, but requires higher commitment on the part of the user (credit history, provision of service).

🔹 Economics of Automation: ROI with RaaS

The RaaS model is the most financially smart for SMBs because it guarantees a return on investment (ROI) from day one without having to risk tied-up capital.

  • Predictable calculation: The monthly fee for RaaS is usually lower than the monthly profit that the robot generates by increasing capacity (e.g. operating a CNC machine at night).
  • Savings: RaaS eliminates unexpected service costs that would otherwise devalue a quick ROI.

🔹 Conclusion: Flexibility wins

RaaS and rental models remove the financial barriers to automation and allow businesses to respond immediately to workforce shortages and productivity pressures. RaaS is the most comprehensive option, offering complete peace of mind.
